Book Covers: Once More With Feeling
My colleague sent me a link to The Book Cover Archive a few days ago. Here’s what happened when I read her message:
- Visited the link and fell madly in love with one of the book covers,
- Decided I must read that book simply because of the cover even though it’s not in SUNCAT and not available through the library,
- Thought, “Hey, haven’t I linked to The Book Cover Archive before?,”
- Searched the archives and found I’d linked to it in 2009,
- Started thinking I used to post a lot about judging books by their covers,
- Found other old book cover-related links and clicked through,
- Found that some old links were dead and that The Book Design Review quit posting in January 2010,
- Clicked the links The Book Design Review recommended for satisfying “your book design jones” (The Casual Optimist, Faceout Books, and The Book Cover Archive),
- Thought again about how (surprisingly?) long Highlights has been around—nearly 5 years!—and
- Realized judging books by their covers is still one of my favorite things!
If you’re still interested in book covers after all these years, try these searches in SUNCAT: “Book Design,” “Type and type-founding,” “Display type,” and “Graphic Design Typography.”
