Groundhog Day? Maybe it’s time for a different animal…
It’s Groundhog Day, and we either are or aren’t going to have six more weeks of winter depending on which of the prognosticating groundhogs you follow.
“Ho-hum,” I say. My attention is focused on another furry, elusive and frankly far more interesting animal today:
The wolverine!
If you watched “Nature” last night on PBS, you’ll understand my sudden fascination. (If you didn’t watch, you can watch the full episode online.) Maybe you knew all about the wolverine, but I didn’t. I only knew I never wanted to run across one in the woods.*
This morning I, of course, turned to SUNCAT to try to find out even more about the wolverine. It doesn’t happen often, but SUNCAT let me down. On the bright side, I’d have a lot to read if I were interested in Wolverine from the X-Men.
When SUNCAT lets me down, it’s time to turn to the library’s databases! Try searching InfoTrac, ProQuest, and World Book Web for “wolverines” or “wolverines and mammals.”

*At the beginning of the program, I asked my husband, who has come across a wolverine in the woods, “If a wolverine and a baboon fought, which one would win?” (Yes, this question is indicative of the deep, philosophical thinking I do.) He said the wolverine would win which made me even more reluctant to run across one since baboons frighten me terribly. (Yes, I realize I am unlikely to ever run across either a baboon or a wolverine in the wild, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying.)
