“Reading the Oscars”
I was so focused on the Academy Award nominees for screenplays based on previously published material that I completely failed to notice that 6 out of the 9 Best Picture nominees are based on books. (This is why I read LISNews and EarlyWord and other book/library blogs: to try to fill all the many gaps and oversights in my knowledge.)
The Best Picture nominees based on books are
- “The Descendants” based on the book by Kaui Hart Hemmings and a short story called “The Minor Wars” from “House of Thieves” also by Hemmings
- “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer
- “The Help” based on the book by Kathryn Stockett
- “Hugo” based on “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selznick
- “Moneyball” based on the book by Michael Lewis
- “War Horse” based on the book by Michael Morpurgo
Are you a read-the-book-first person? Or a watch-the-movie-first person?
Entertainment Weekly’s Shelf Life blog is comparing the books and movies in their “Reading the Oscars” series. The first post is on “The Descendants.”
