Just Flipping Around
While searching on PoetryFoundation.org this morning for poems about winter, I found instead this delightful* article about the “ancient literary practice of Just Flipping Around.” You should click through and read it; I’ll wait. I so want to be a flipper—flipping around seems to embrace serendipity and chance, and doesn’t that seem exciting?—but I’m just not. As a child I think...

“Tim Burton’s Communally Built Story, Now Finished” from The Huffington Post:* Tim Burton used the exquisite corpse technique on Twitter to build a story for one of his characters. Read the result on his website. I used my old friend Wikipedia to learn more about exquisite corpse, and I now realize I’ve played this as a parlor game…not knowing at the time that I was...

“Dimensions,” www.howbigreally.com, from the BBC:* “Dimensions takes important places, events and things, and overlays them onto a map of where you are. Type in your postcode or a place name to get started.” *YOU sent me this link, and I think I could spend all day comparing how big things were. Thank you, YOU!

“The Coolest Subways Around the World” on Off Track Planet:* “Subways are not just a means of getting from point A to point B. Across the globe there are entire sub-cultures bubbling beneath your feet. Waste no time, under space awaits you.” Although I haven’t said so in a while, I continue to support public transportation. And growing up in Florida with no subways,...

Librarian Anniversary
Today (Dec. 13, 2010) is the 8th anniversary of my graduation from library school. It’s been eight pretty wonderful years! If you’ve ever thought—or maybe “dreamed” is a better word—of becoming a librarian, do like I did more than eight years ago and read up on library science and librarianship before you make any life-changing decisions: Search SUNCAT for the...

PANTONE 2011 Color of the Year: So, the Color of the Year was announced this week and it is … … wait for it … wait for it … Honeysuckle! I always think of honeysuckle blooms as mostly white with yellow, but okay, reddish pink is nice, too. If you wait each year for this announcement (as I do) or are just interested in colors, search SUNCAT for the subject...

“THE LGRAB Guide to Winter Bicycling” on Let’s Go Ride a Bike: “Do you want to be as happy this winter as Mr. Snowman?  Ride your bike!” If the bloggers from Let’s Go Ride a Bike who live in Nashville and Chicago can ride their bikes in winter, surely you and I can manage it in Florida. (That’s right, Chicago! Brrrrr!)

"Birds of America" at your library
An early, well-preserved edition of Audubon’s “Birds of America” now owns the title of world’s most expensive printed book. If you’d like to see what the fuss is all about, you can find much newer, not as well-preserved copies in the libraries by searching SUNCAT for “Birds of America” as a title and “Audubon” as the author. And, be sure to...

“The Yokoo Soopa Pompom Wreath” on Urban Outfitters’ blog:*  Make a yarn pompom holiday wreath. This craft is attractive and looks easy to do! (The crafter in the photo looks unimpressed by her creation, but she shouldn’t be because it’s great.) The only reason I won’t be making one of these is that I have a pine cone wreath for the holidays that I love....

“3D Printing” on Wikipedia:* 3D printing still seems like something from Star Trek to me. I don’t quite understand it yet—do you get it? I keep thinking, “How is this possible?”—but this article from Wikipedia and the magazine I came across in the bookstore with a big article on it are helping. *Found on the RepRapWiki which was found on the MakerBot Wiki...
