Favorite Book of 2009? the decade?
Over on the Libraries’ Facebook page, we’ve asked you to name your favorite book of 2009 or of the past decade. So far, Neal Stephenson’s “Baroque Cycle“ has been noted. What would you choose as your book of the year and/or book of the decade? My choice for book of the decade is “Blood Diamonds: Tracing the Deadly Path of the World’s Most Precious...

"Want to get a job [or at least minimize...
I came across this blog post from “ArchivesNext” on LISNews.org this morning. Although ArchivesNext is a blog aimed at archivists, I think this job hunting advice could apply to anyone, regardless of current or potential occupation. In an extremely difficult job market, you don’t want to lose a job opportunity because of a typo in your resume/application or something you forgot...

“Spirograph,” http://wordsmith.org/anu/java/spirograph.html: It’s a spirograph maker! Generate spiral designs on your screen. While gift shopping for others recently, I may have self-gifted a disappointing knock-off of the original Spirograph toy I had as a child. Did you have a Spirograph? My childhood one looked like this: Peabody Penguin’s Collections - Page 6 of 6...

“Games in Libraries, December 2009,” podcast at gamesinlibraries.org: Three of your very own librarians (yes, I’m one of them!) are included in the December 2009 Games in Libraries podcast. We discuss the Jacaranda Library’s Community Chess Game. If you’d like to skip to our part, it’s at about the 17:37 mark, but the whole podcast is worth a listen if...

Typos
Have you ever found a typo in a library catalog? I have, and even SUNCAT contains typographical errors. A colleague just sent me a link to a blog about typos in library catalogs: “Typo of the Day for Librarians,” http://librarytypos.blogspot.com/. The librarians who write it make typos educational and entertaining! Enjyo!

Steal this Blog Post about The Director’s Chair! →
The Ask a Librarian Blog said to steal this post, so I did! (Technically, I linked to it instead of stealing it.)

I love “best of”  and “top ten” lists, and this is the right time of year for them! Find most—maybe all—of them with largehearted boy’s “Online ‘Best of 2009’ Book Lists” and “2009 Year-End Online Music Lists.” _________________________________________ “Writer Evan Ratliff Tried to Vanish: Here’s What...

American Letters
Did you hear about the letter by George Washington that just sold at auction for $3.2 million? You don’t have to pay $3.2 million to read George Washington’s letters. You just need your library card! Find George Washington’s correspondence in SUNCAT by searching for the subject “Washington, George, 1732-1799—Correspondence.” Also, the Library of Congress has...

Library Routes Project, libraryroutesproject.wikkii.com:* “The Library Routes Project was set up in October 2009…to bring together the thoughts and experiences of Information Professionals on how they got where they are today, and why they chose to work in libraries at all.” Of course, I’m interested in this site because it’s all librarians, but I’m always...

"Failure is the condiment that gives success its...
The month of NaNo/NaBlo is over! NaBloPoEvWoDaMo was a success! I posted every workday plus made 3 extra posts for a total of 23 posts in November. And, I enjoyed posting more than ever. NaNoWriMo was a failure. Is it really necessary for me to share my final word count? Let’s just say it was low—not zero, but nowhere close to 50,000 words. Early on, I asked myself, “Why was it...
